Market context
What’s driving demand in Power
The transmission system is being rebuilt at a pace not seen in generations. Onshore reinforcement, offshore transmission, subsea HVDC links between Scotland and England and a growing interconnector portfolio have all landed at once, and every one of them needs the same scarce specialisms.
HVDC is the sharpest example. Converter station design, protection, testing and commissioning is a small global talent pool, and UK projects compete for it against European and Asian programmes running on similar timelines. Scarcity here shows up as schedule risk, not as a recruitment line item.
Thermal and flexible generation has not gone away either. CCGT outages, gas peakers, biomass and the first CCS-equipped power projects still need outage managers, mechanical supervisors and commissioning engineers, often on tightly-boxed windows where a late start is not recoverable.
