Market context
What’s driving demand in Data Centres
UK data centre construction has moved from steady to strained. AI-driven capacity demand, the designation of data centres as Critical National Infrastructure and a heavy Slough, West London and Docklands cluster have created concentrated demand for a narrow set of MEP and commissioning skills.
Commissioning is where programmes usually slip. The L1–L5 process — factory testing through to integrated systems testing — is unforgiving, and a shortage of experienced commissioning managers and Cx agents pushes handover dates far more often than construction productivity does.
Grid connection has become the other hard constraint. Power availability now shapes site selection, and projects are increasingly being planned around on-site generation, storage and demand flexibility, which pulls in electrical engineering skills the sector historically borrowed from utilities and power.
